Why this bookstore exists

Greek books deserve a shelf in America too.

Every year, beautiful books are written in Greek, by Greeks in Greece and by Greeks who made their lives here. Most of them never reach an American reader. We started Greek Books FL to change that.

The empty space on the shelf

The big stores sell the world’s books. Greek books get lost there.

On Amazon and the large bookstores, a book written in Greek has almost no way to be promoted in Greek. No one recommends it to the reader who would love it, no one talks about it in the language it was written in. It sits there, unseen.

So we try to fill that gap, any way we can.

How we fill the gap

  1. A store that speaks both languagesEvery book presented in English and in Greek, side by side.
  2. The first chapter, freeOpen any book and read before you decide.
  3. Authors on the radioWriters talk about their books on Greek News & Radio FL.
  4. Readers and writers, face to faceReadings and evenings in the Salon, here in Florida.
  5. A home for authorsWriters bring their books to our shelves, and we help readers find them.

Two peoples, one spirit

Greeks and Americans have stood together for a very long time.

  1. AthensThe idea of democracy that the founders of the United States studied and argued over.
  2. 1821American philhellenes stand with Greece in its fight for freedom. In Congress, Daniel Webster speaks for the Greek cause.
  3. 1900sGreek families build new lives across America. In Florida, the sponge divers of Tarpon Springs.
  4. 1940sAllies in the Second World War, on the same side of history.
  5. TodayGreek-Americans writing in both languages, and readers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Η λογοτεχνία ενώνει λαούς και πνεύματα.

Literature brings peoples, and minds, together.

A Greek novel read in Ohio, an American memoir read in Thessaloniki. Every book that crosses the Atlantic carries a little of one people to the other. That is the work we want to do, one book at a time.
