Antonis Kontos documents, for the first time, every singer from a single Greek province together with all the songs they recorded. This volume covers the eastern district, the plain around Lake Copais, and spans sixty years of discography, from 1917 to 1977. It contains 208 photographs and the lyrics of 343 songs. It opens with the earliest recordings, made by Greek prisoners of war in Görlitz in 1917 and by researcher Melpo Merlier in 1930, and runs through the era of 45 and 33 rpm records. The central figure is Giorgos Meintanas, who had a celebrated career in both Greece and America, alongside Kostas Zografos and eighteen other singers from the area, each with their own biography, photographs, and songs.
The author has researched Greek song since 1986, and this book rests on personal interviews with the singers themselves, their relatives, and years spent gathering recordings and documents. Much of this material had never been recorded before, and the author notes that without this research, a large part of the region's musical heritage risked being lost for good. It works as a biographical album, a historical record of an entire era, and a source for the study of Greek discography.
Anyone with roots in the villages of eastern Livadeia (Agia Anna, Agios Vlasis, Agios Georgios, Agios Dimitrios, Agios Spyridonas, Agia Triada, Arachova, Distomo, Evangelistria, Zeriki, Thourio, Kaparelli, Kyriaki, Kyrtoni, Lafystio, Livadeia, Mavrogeia, Mazi, Orchomenos, Pera Chorio Livadeias), lovers of Greek folk song and discography, researchers of folklore and local history, and the Greek diaspora looking to stay connected to their roots in Boeotia.
