This second and final volume completes the documentation of the traditional singers and musicians of the province of Livadeia. It covers the western district, Arachova, Distomo, Livadeia, Steiri, Antikyra, and Davleia, with special attention to the musicians who emigrated and made careers in America, Antonis Sakellariou, the Stamos family, and Giannis Sfountouris. It also includes extensive first person accounts from ethnomusicologist Sotiris Tsianis, who studied in the United States and later worked with the Academy of Athens' Folklore Archive. Together, the two volumes span two full generations of singers, 745 songs, 429 photographs, and 328 documents across 950 pages.
The foreword is written by musicologist Giorgos Evangelou, a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Music Studies, University of Ioannina, who points to the value of the author's direct contact with the musicians and their families. This volume draws on new archival research, including American sources and the registry of the Athens-Piraeus Musicians' Association, and completes what Volume 1 began, forming together a full reference work on the musical history of the province.
Anyone with roots in the villages of western Livadeia (Arachova, Distomo, Livadeia, Steiri, Antikyra, Davleia, Kyriaki), especially those with family history of emigration to America, lovers of Greek folk song and discography, folklore researchers, and anyone who already owns Volume 1 and wants to complete the set.
