The collection opens with the moving “A Small Slip of Paper” by Irini Andritsi, a story following a woman’s journey from Athens to Tokyo, seeking answers to a mysterious tanka found among her father’s papers. The journey aboard the Hikari train reveals a profound family history connecting 1950s Lyon with contemporary Tokyo. Each story in the collection offers a different perspective on Japanese culture—from cherry blossoms to Hiroshima, from chrysanthemums to karoshi. The authors explore themes of love, loss, identity, and cultural encounter, creating a rich mosaic that honors both Greek and Japanese traditions.
Imagine opening a book and finding not merely short stories, but a cultural bridge extending from Piraeus to Tokyo. “The Flight of the Ibis” is not an ordinary anthology—it is a literary experiment that for the first time in Greek literature weds short fiction with Japanese tanka poetry. Thirty-one authors from Greece and Cyprus were inspired by the invitation to create texts with Japanese thematic focus, and the result is captivating. Each story incorporates tanka and scenes aboard shinkansen trains, creating a unique aesthetic experience that combines the Greek prose tradition with Japanese poetic wisdom.
This book addresses readers who love contemporary Greek prose and are simultaneously captivated by Japanese culture. Ideal for those who appreciate literary innovation and cultural collaboration, as well as tanka poetry enthusiasts who wish to see it integrated into prose fiction. The collection will be particularly enjoyed by those interested in contemporary forms of anthology and intercultural literature.
