The Salon
A table where Greek and American writers sit together.
Conversations with the authors on our shelves, books paired across two languages, and evenings where readers meet the people who wrote them.
This month’s pairing
The same war. Two ways of remembering.
In 1941 George C. Kakridas was five, playing football in the village square near Sparta, when the German trucks arrived. His memoir follows the occupation, the famine and the civil war through a child’s eyes, and his mother Panagiota, who held the family together, until he leaves for America.
Kostas Tzavellas comes to the same years as a novelist. His story opens in 1970s Australia, where Andreas Petridis finally tells his daughter why he left Greece, and goes back to 1943 and 1944 and the Monastery of Saint George of Feneos.
One is memory, the other is fiction built on research. One was written in English, the other in Greek. Read together, they show the same war from inside a child’s fear and from a novelist’s distance, and both end with someone who had to leave to survive it.
